AN BHLASCOAD MHÓR – THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
The view is for always
The peace is for always
The time is for always on the Blasket Isle.
But
The dead live on in our hearts.
Beating in rythm with the waves.
It is true the wide world left them behind
But be sure, in the years to come,
They will rise again.
Is buan é an radharc,
Is buan í an tsiocháin,
Is buan é an tam ar an Blascaod Mór,
Ach,
Is beo iad na mairbh inár gcroíthe
Ag bualadh le rithim glór na dtonn,
Is fíor gur fhág an domhan mór ina dhiaidh iad-
Na hoileanaigh caillte ina gcuid taibhreamh-
Ach,
siurailte, sna blianta atá romhainn

DOMINICK DE FAOITE – SUMMER OF 1985
Born and reared in Ireland Dominic spent his
formative years in Dublin before choosing to
go to England in his late teens.
There he spent the next ten or twelve years
working at various unskilled jobs.
He returned to his homeland in the late sixties.
By this time he had decided to try and become a
writer, taking any kind of work and mostly staying
on the road. He lived as he could until in 1973
he visited the Blasket Islands for the first time.
It was here he drew the inspiration for any of the
poems or the short story in this book.
If some of the pieces are not directly concerned
with the Islands they are about the people who
have held on the true heritage of old Ireland
as best as they can.
He is now 50 years of age, to the best of his
knowledge and this is his first book.
A MOST UNRENOWNED POET
AN BHLASCOAD MHÓR – THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
The Blaskets have attracted many writers. One who had almost remained unknown is Dominick de Faoite. Because of his turbulent biography?
Yet, already in 1985, an anthology of his poems and prose was published in distant Germany, unnoticed in Ireland. Ulrike Thelen, and obstinate admirer of Faoite and the Blaskets, now proposes an enlarged reprint of her 1985 publication under the title “The Sleeping Beauty”: 30 pages of poetry placed amidst double-paged transparent photographs of times gone by.
A reminder? Rather an invitation for the reader to abandon to Blasket mood and emotions: to the challenge of beauty, the might of nature, the twilight of ages past, the quest for meaning and accomplishment.
